Alaafin Gives Ooni 48 Hours To Revoke Okanlomo Title

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has issued a stern warning to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, demanding the reversal of the Okanlomo of Yorubaland chieftaincy title conferred on businessman Dotun Sanusi.

In a statement signed by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin described the Ooni’s action as an affront to his authority, insisting that only the Alaafin holds the exclusive right to bestow titles that cover the entire Yorubaland.

He accused the Ooni of exceeding his jurisdiction and ignoring a Supreme Court ruling that, according to him, affirmed the Alaafin’s sole powers in such matters. The statement noted that the Ooni’s authority is restricted to Oranmiyan Local Government, now divided into Ife Central, Ife North and Ife South.

The Alaafin directed the Ooni to withdraw the title within 48 hours or face unspecified consequences. He cautioned that his commitment to peace should not be mistaken for weakness, describing the Ooni’s action as unlawful and derogatory to the institution of the Alaafin.

Efforts to get the Ooni’s reaction were unsuccessful, as his Director of Media and Public Affairs, Moses Olafare, did not respond to calls or messages as of press time.
