A former National Treasurer of the Labour Party, Oluchi Oparah, has dismissed claims that Peter Obi used party funds for his 2023 presidential campaign.
She said the former Anambra State governor personally funded his activities and even contributed financially to the party during the election period.
Oparah said there was no point at which Obi touched the party’s money, adding that his financial support helped revive the Labour Party at a time when it was struggling with debts and unable to pay staff salaries. She said he met all the party’s financial obligations expected of him and also made personal donations to keep the party running.
She explained that campaign financing operated separately from party accounts, with candidates managing their own campaign accounts while the party maintained its own. According to her, Obi paid for several party programmes himself because the Labour Party lacked funds at the time.
Oparah challenged those making accusations to present proof of any wrongdoing, stating that Obi never took money from the party. She argued that instead of targeting him, Nigerians should focus on holding the current All Progressives Congress government accountable for its performance.
She also described Obi as a consistent philanthropist whose charitable activities long predated his presidential run. In her view, his generosity and personal spending during the campaign reflected a pattern of giving that had always defined his public and private life.
