Peter Obi Vows To Serve Only One Term If Elected President In 2027

Peter Obi has pledged to serve only one term if elected president in the 2027 general election.

The former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate under the Labour Party made this known in a statement shared on his official X handle on Sunday.

Obi explained that his decision stems from his belief in purposeful and accountable leadership. According to him, true leadership is not defined by the length of time spent in office, but by what is achieved while in power. He referred to historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela as examples of leaders whose brief time in office left lasting legacies.

The promise to serve for only four years, Obi said, is a personal commitment. He stated that it reflects his conviction that meaningful change can be achieved within a single term if the leader is prepared, focused, and dedicated. He added that Nigeria’s constitution allows a four-year renewable tenure, but he intends to use only one term to deliver his plans if elected.

Obi pointed out that many Nigerians no longer trust politicians because of repeated broken promises. He acknowledged this widespread scepticism but said his track record in Anambra State proves that he honours his word. During his time as governor, he said he delivered on key promises in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and financial transparency.

He said his decision is not driven by public pressure but by principle. Obi believes long stays in power often lead to abuse and loss of focus, especially in Africa. He called for a culture where leaders understand that their duty is to serve, not to cling to power.

He ended his statement by urging Nigerians to focus more on results than duration, stressing that leadership should be impactful rather than endless. He said he remains committed to rebuilding trust through responsible governance if given the opportunity to lead.
