In a recent condolence visit to the Rufai family residence in Amuwo Odofin Estate, Lagos, PFAN officials and former footballers expressed solidarity and promised to stand by the family throughout the burial arrangements. The delegation included respected figures like Clement Temile, Taju Disu, and Tajudeen Ajide, who led the visit and assured the family that both state and federal authorities would not abandon them.
Dele Rufai, speaking on behalf of the family, welcomed the support and said the gesture came at the right time, lifting the spirits of those grieving the loss.
As part of the planned tributes, PFAN is coordinating with the Lagos Sports Commission and the Lagos State Football Association to organise a special football match in Rufai’s honour. All registered football clubs and academies in Lagos will be invited to participate, with players expected to wear their official club kits for the ceremony. The valedictory match will hold on the same day as the burial, at either Teslim Balogun Stadium or Onikan Stadium, depending on the final approval for the lying in state.
Rufai, remembered for his passion and leadership on the pitch, remains one of the most iconic goalkeepers in Nigeria’s football history. As preparations continue, many are hopeful that his funeral will reflect the respect he earned during his lifetime.
