The Independent National Electoral Commission in Niger State has confirmed it is ready to conduct a byelection to fill the vacant seat for Munya constituency in the state House of Assembly.

The seat became vacant nearly a year ago after the death of Joseph Haruna Sduza in September. Sduza, a retired Air Force officer, served as the chairman of the House Committee on Security and Intelligence until his death after a brief illness.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting at INEC’s headquarters in Minna, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Ahmed Yushau Garki, revealed that political parties had already submitted the names of their candidates. The party primaries were held between July 17 and 21.

Munya constituency has 11 registration areas, 119 polling units, and a total of 62,459 registered voters expected to participate in the vote.
Garki announced that campaign activities will officially begin on August 2 and close on August 14, with the election scheduled for August 16. He advised political parties to maintain peace during campaigns and follow the election timetable strictly. He also promised that the commission would ensure a credible, transparent, and fair election process.
In a related development, a document at the INEC office in Minna indicates that a fresh round of continuous voter registration will begin across Nigeria. The online registration starts on August 18, while physical registration at INEC state offices will commence on August 25.
