Tinubu described Buhari’s death as a moment of deep national loss. He said Nigeria had lost a patriot who dedicated his life to public service and the country’s progress. Buhari served as military head of state between 1984 and 1985 and returned decades later as a two-term civilian president from 2015 to 2023.

According to the President, Buhari was known for his strong moral compass, discipline, and commitment to the country. He said Buhari confronted corruption directly and consistently prioritised national interest above personal gain.

The emergency council meeting is expected to focus on coordinating plans for the late president’s burial and memorials. Tinubu assured Nigerians that the federal government would arrange a funeral worthy of Buhari’s legacy and lifelong contributions to Nigeria’s development.

In his message, Tinubu offered condolences to Buhari’s widow, Aisha, their children, and the rest of the family. He also extended his sympathies to the people of Katsina State and the traditional rulers of the Daura Emirate, Buhari’s hometown.

As the nation begins a week of mourning, Tinubu urged Nigerians to remember the values Buhari stood for and let his legacy inspire a renewed commitment to selfless service. He prayed for peace for the late leader’s soul and strength for those left behind.
