The incident occurred just a day after the bank renewed its domain name for five years.

Although no hacking group has claimed responsibility, the attackers have created a fake HTTP layer of the website, potentially aiming to steal customer data through phishing, according to Peoples Gazette.

A cybersecurity expert suggests that the bank’s login details may have been compromised, rather than the domain address being stolen for resale.

GTBank customers have taken to social media to express frustration, with many unable to access the website for transactions. Bank representatives have urged patience and directed customers to a designated channel for assistance.

The incident raises concerns about the security of customer data and the bank’s online services.

GTBank, one of Nigeria’s largest banks, serves millions of customers in Nigeria and other African countries. The bank’s spokesman has not yet commented on the incident.
