A Frontline human rights activist, public affairs analyst, critic, opinion moulder and author, Comrade Paul Ikechukwu Njoku, has urged the Governor of Kano State, His Excellency, Umar Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State not to execute Singer Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, adding that section 10 of the 1999 constitution as amended, prohibits religious prosecution and policing in Nigeria.

It would be recall that Sharif-Aminu, a 23- year old Islamic Gospel Musician was recently sentenced to death by hanging by Justice Qadi Ali Kani of Kano State Shari’ah Court for blasphemy against Prophet Mohammad.

It should be recalled that some aggrieved Muslim faithfuls besieged and burnt down Sharif’s family house after he was arrested by the Kano State Hisban Police (Sharia Police) and detained in Kano Central Prison, lamenting that the song was blasphemous as it praised an Imam from the Tijaniya Muslim Brotherhood to the extent it elevated him above Prophet Mohammad.

Meanwhile, the Muslim Lawyers Association and the Supreme Council for Shari’a in Nigeria (SCSN) have urged the Governor of Kano State to immidiately execute the death sentence without delay.

“I therefore urge governor Ganduje not to approve the execution of Yahaya Sharif-Aminu. He should be released from Kano Central Prison unconditionally even as the death sentence is subject to appeal.”
