Umahi said the projects span the country’s six geopolitical zones and are intended to improve transportation, support commercial activities and strengthen connections between important economic centres.

He explained that the road works form part of the Federal Government’s efforts to address the poor condition of roads across the country. According to the minister, the administration is committed to improving infrastructure inherited from previous governments and making road travel safer and more efficient.

Umahi said the projects would be closely supervised to ensure that contractors meet the required standards and complete the work within the agreed timelines. He added that contractors had been instructed to mobilise to their respective sites without delay.

The minister also assured Nigerians that the contract awards followed due process and that the government had taken steps to ensure value for money despite the large financial commitment involved.

The nine approved projects include the reconstruction of the 81.1-kilometre Ado–Ilawe–Ilumaba–Ikole Road in Ekiti State, which has an allocation of ₦209 billion. The project will also involve the construction of a bridge.

Another ₦167 billion has been approved for the reconstruction of the 95-kilometre Etuke–Okeni–Ankpa–Otopa Road in Kogi State.

In Kano State, the government approved ₦89.2 billion for the construction of the 47-kilometre Bichi Ring Road, which will include a flyover.

The Tungo–Karamti Road, which connects Adamawa and Taraba states, is also among the projects. The government approved ₦62 billion for the road, including the construction of five bridges.

The Federal Executive Council further approved remedial works on deteriorated sections of the East–West Road. However, the minister did not disclose the amount allocated to the repairs.

In Sokoto State, ₦28.218 billion has been approved for the rehabilitation of the 17-kilometre Sokoto–Illela Road, designated Route A1.

The government also approved ₦20.257 billion for an 18-kilometre road linking Asaba to the Port Harcourt–Enugu Expressway.

Another ₦11.33 billion was approved for a road project previously undertaken by the Abia State Government under the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited tax-credit scheme.

The ninth project is the Dikko–Maje link road in Niger State, which will connect to the Suleja–Minna Road. The project has received an allocation of ₦14.486 billion.

The Federal Government expects the projects to improve road connectivity, ease the movement of people and goods, and support economic activities in the affected areas. Their delivery will depend on effective supervision, timely execution and compliance with the required construction standards.
