The Kwankwassiyya Movement has announced plans to engage the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the omission of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo and his running mate, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, from the final list of candidates for the 2027 Kano State governorship election.
The party has described the omission as an error and said it is seeking a correction from the electoral commission.
Speaking on Arise Television, the movement’s spokesperson, Habibu Mohammed, said the development came as a surprise because, according to him, there had been no previous dispute with INEC concerning the candidates.
Mohammed maintained that Kwankwaso was registered with the NDC within the stipulated period and had met the relevant requirements for participation in the election.
He added that the movement was unaware of any court judgment or order that could explain why the two candidates were excluded from the final list.
The spokesperson also pointed to Kwankwaso’s previous experience as a deputy governor, arguing that his political record made the omission particularly puzzling.
Mohammed said electoral provisions allowed candidates whose names were omitted from the list to seek redress within 14 days. He confirmed that the movement intended to explore the available legal options and engage INEC to resolve the matter.
He stressed that the Kwankwassiyya Movement would pursue the issue through lawful channels, expressing confidence that the omission could be corrected once the relevant concerns were addressed.
INEC had not provided an explanation for the omission in the account given by the movement.
