Apologise To Tinubu Now – Reno Omokri Tells Atiku

Nigerian ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has called on African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar to apologise to President Bola Tinubu for repeatedly addressing him by his first name.

Omokri made the demand in a post on his verified X account, arguing that Atiku should address the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces with the respect attached to his office.

He said using Tinubu’s first name during political engagements reflected poor judgement and raised questions about the former vice-president’s temperament and suitability for leadership.

Omokri also argued that the manner in which political opponents address a sitting president could affect how Nigeria and its political system are perceived internationally.

He criticised Atiku for referring to Tinubu as Bola, saying the former vice-president had shown greater restraint when dealing with other political leaders, even during disagreements.

Omokri cited Atiku’s relationship with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, noting that despite their political differences, Atiku continued to address him by his presidential title rather than his first name.

He recalled that Obasanjo had previously taken actions against Atiku during their time in government, including declaring the office of the vice-president vacant in December 2006 and withdrawing some of his official privileges.

According to Omokri, Obasanjo also ordered Atiku out of a Federal Executive Council meeting during their political dispute.

He contrasted those events with Tinubu’s past relationship with Atiku, claiming that the current President had supported the former vice-president when he faced political difficulties and had offered him a presidential ticket under the Action Congress platform.

Omokri questioned why Atiku would address Tinubu informally despite what he described as the President’s previous support, while continuing to use a formal title for Obasanjo despite their strained relationship.

He further argued that the approach could deepen political divisions in the country, maintaining that opposition figures should demonstrate respect for the presidency even when criticising the administration.

Atiku and Tinubu are among the prominent political figures expected to feature in discussions surrounding the 2027 presidential election.
