2027: Over 1,000 Islamic Clerics Ask Tinubu Not To Seek Re-Election

More than 1,000 Islamic clerics have called on President Bola Tinubu to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, citing economic hardship and insecurity in the country.

The clerics made the call in a communique issued after a meeting in Kano where they assessed the state of the nation under the Tinubu administration and discussed the 2027 general elections.

The meeting was organised under the theme, An Assessment of the State of the Nation under President Tinubu and the 2027 General Elections.

The clerics, operating under the Ko Da Naka… For the Struggle to Promote Good Governance and Community Development and AFAQ Educational Foundation, said they were dissatisfied with the way the country was being governed.

They attributed the worsening living conditions faced by many Nigerians to several economic policies introduced by the administration, including the removal of the petrol subsidy, floating of the naira, increase in electricity tariffs and tax reforms.

According to the communique, the policies had increased pressure on ordinary Nigerians at a time when the cost of living and unemployment remained major concerns.

The clerics criticised the government for maintaining the policies despite their reported effects on citizens, arguing that the administration should review measures that they believe have contributed to the hardship.

They also accused the government of placing greater attention on increasing revenue while many Nigerians were struggling with rising living costs and unemployment.

The group consequently called for Tinubu not to be re-elected in 2027 unless the government changes what they described as harmful economic policies.

The development comes shortly after two Islamic groups, Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa’ikamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS) and the Qadiriyya Sufi sect, endorsed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for the 2027 election.

The endorsements were made during a visit by Senator Abdulaziz Yari, Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, to the groups.

The contrasting positions from the Islamic groups come as political activities and alignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
