Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has appointed 10 former local government chairmen as Special Advisers and another 1,710 persons as Executive Assistants.
The new appointees were sworn in on Wednesday at the Abakaliki Township Stadium as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary and the 30th anniversary of Ebonyi State.
The governor also presented staff of office to three traditional rulers from Afikpo, Edda and Ishielu Local Government Areas.
Speaking at the ceremony, Nwifuru said the creation of Ebonyi State three decades ago was achieved through the sacrifices and determination of its founding leaders.
He said the state had developed considerably since its creation and had become an established part of the Nigerian federation.
Nwifuru said his administration’s policies had been guided by the need to prepare the state for future generations, with education, human capital development, infrastructure and economic opportunities forming key areas of focus.
The governor said his administration, which began in 2023, had invested in roads, bridges, hospitals, education, agriculture, security and other areas of human development.
In the education sector, Nwifuru said 39 model classroom blocks had been constructed across the state’s 13 local government areas. He added that the government had provided textbooks, reference materials, early-childhood education resources, furniture and other learning facilities.
He also disclosed that the state had introduced local and international postgraduate scholarship programmes for qualified Ebonyi graduates.
According to him, a Senate Building had been completed at the ICT University in Oferekpe Agbaja, while eight three-storey hostel blocks were under construction.
Nwifuru said the Professor Fidelis Ogah Senior Staff Quarters at the ICT University had also been completed and commissioned, while construction work was ongoing at two universities established by his administration.
He added that 12 two-storey faculty buildings were under construction at the University of ICT and University of Aeronautic Engineering, while additional faculty complexes were being developed at the Abakaliki and Ishieke campuses of Ebonyi State University.
The governor said internal roads at the university were being rehabilitated with concrete pavement, alongside the installation of streetlights. He added that the monthly subvention to Ebonyi State University had risen from N150 million to N280 million.
On infrastructure, Nwifuru said the administration had completed more than 1,000 kilometres of roads across the state’s 13 local government areas, alongside two kilometres of roads in each community.
He said an urban renewal programme was also underway in Abakaliki, while construction work was progressing on the Vanco flyover and tunnel.
The governor said the state had purchased road construction equipment to improve the capacity of the Ministry of Works and support the execution of infrastructure projects.
He added that the projects were intended not only to improve infrastructure but also to create jobs and provide practical opportunities for engineers, contractors, artisans, technicians, equipment operators and other construction workers.
In healthcare, Nwifuru said his administration was carrying out a broad programme covering primary and secondary healthcare facilities, medical personnel, equipment, medicines, health insurance and emergency services.
He said billions of naira had been committed to the health sector, with particular attention given to primary healthcare.
According to the governor, the investment in healthcare was aimed at improving the wellbeing of residents and supporting productivity, education, security and long-term development.
Nwifuru said the 30th anniversary of Ebonyi was not only an occasion to reflect on the state’s history but also an opportunity to consider the responsibilities of the present administration towards future generations.
