2027: APC Group Warns Obi, NDC Over Result Transmission

A pro-All Progressives Congress (APC) group, Renewed Hope for Greater Nigeria (RHGN), has called on the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to clarify plans to independently receive election results from polling units during the 2027 general elections.

The group raised concerns that an additional system for collecting election results could create confusion if it is seen as an alternative to the official process managed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

RHGN Deputy National Leader for the South-East, Mazi Franklin Ngoforo, made the call while speaking to journalists in Umuahia, Abia State.

His comments followed an interview Obi gave on September 10, 2026, in which the NDC presidential candidate said his team planned to establish a system through which it could independently receive polling-unit results at its situation room while the results were also transmitted through the official INEC platform.

Obi had explained that the proposed arrangement would allow his team to monitor results independently and compare them with figures recorded at polling units. He also rejected the suggestion that the plan was intended to create a parallel electoral commission.

Ngoforo, however, said the proposal required further explanation, particularly regarding who would operate the system, its legal basis and whether it would function strictly as a monitoring mechanism or be used for determining election results.

He also referred to an earlier proposal attributed to Professor Pat Utomi concerning an independent election-results transmission arrangement, saying the developments warranted clarification ahead of the 2027 elections.

The APC-linked group maintained that the constitutional responsibility for conducting and managing elections remains with INEC. It also pointed to provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 concerning the electronic transmission of polling-unit results to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal.

Under the electoral framework cited by the group, presiding officers are required to electronically transmit polling-unit results after completing and signing the prescribed result sheet. Where electronic transmission fails, the signed polling-unit result remains available for the prescribed collation process.

Ngoforo said political parties and candidates have a legitimate interest in monitoring elections and demanding transparency, but argued that such monitoring should operate within the existing legal framework.

He also called on security agencies, including the Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force and Office of the National Security Adviser, to seek clarification about the proposed system and determine its intended purpose.

The RHGN official urged political actors to avoid actions that could create uncertainty or tension during the 2027 electoral process and called for efforts to strengthen public confidence in the established electoral system.
