Wike Denies Lobbying for APC Campaign Council DG

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has denied reports that he is lobbying to become the Director General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wike dismissed the report through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, describing the claim as false.

The minister said he had not discussed the leadership or membership of the proposed campaign council with anyone and was not seeking any position in the campaign structure.

The denial followed a report by a national newspaper which listed Wike among senior political figures and government officials allegedly interested in becoming the campaign council’s Director General.

Wike, however, reaffirmed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s bid for another term in office, saying his commitment to the President’s re-election did not depend on holding a position in the campaign organisation.

The minister said he was currently outside Nigeria taking a break after spending more than 30 days commissioning completed projects, inspecting ongoing works and launching new projects in the FCT.

He said his attention would return to the implementation of his responsibilities under Tinubu’s administration once he returned to the country.

Wike also said he would continue working to improve Tinubu’s electoral prospects in Rivers State and the FCT, where he said he could contribute to the President’s re-election without being part of the campaign council.

The minister, who remains a prominent figure within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party despite serving in Tinubu’s cabinet, maintained that his priority was delivering on his mandate and supporting the President’s political ambitions.

He said there was therefore no need for him to seek the position of campaign council Director General or membership of the council before contributing to Tinubu’s expected victory in 2027.
