Peter Obi Calls For Leadership Measured By Impact On Lives

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has called for a style of leadership that is judged by its direct impact on the lives of citizens.

Obi made the call while serving as the special guest of honour at an empowerment programme organised by the member representing Awka North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Prof. Lilian Orogbu.

He commended Orogbu for what he described as people-focused representation, saying programmes that directly support citizens can improve livelihoods and help tackle poverty.

More than 500 constituents benefited from the empowerment programme, receiving items including cars, shuttle buses, tricycles, motorcycles, sewing machines, grinding machines, deep freezers and 1KVA and 2KVA generating sets.

Some students also received scholarships as part of efforts to support education within the constituency.

Obi said such interventions could help families improve their economic conditions, create opportunities for self-employment and reduce some of the social pressures facing communities.

He expressed concern about unemployment, insecurity and difficulties in the education and healthcare sectors, linking many of the challenges to poor governance and ineffective management of public resources.

The former Anambra State governor said Nigeria could make progress if the country was led by competent and accountable leaders capable of tackling hunger, insecurity, unemployment and economic hardship.

He also urged Nigerians to demand credible elections ahead of the 2027 general elections, calling for an electoral process based on fairness, justice and equal treatment.

Orogbu said the empowerment programme was organised to appreciate her supporters, volunteers and constituents who contributed to her victory during the 2023 general elections.

She said more than 36,000 people voted for her, while over 5,000 supporters took part in her campaign.

The lawmaker acknowledged that the large number of constituents made it impossible to accommodate everyone in one phase of the programme. She disclosed that another empowerment exercise had been planned for November 2026.

Orogbu urged beneficiaries to use the items productively, saying the initiative was designed to improve livelihoods, create jobs and strengthen families across Awka North and South Federal Constituency.

She said sustained support for residents could help reduce poverty, address youth unemployment and promote economic activity at the grassroots.

The Anambra State Chairman of the NDC, Ikem Uzoezie, congratulated Orogbu and commended her efforts to fulfil her campaign commitments through constituency projects.

He urged residents to continue supporting the party, expressing hope that further electoral backing would translate into more development initiatives and improved welfare.

The senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh, also praised Orogbu for her representation and described her as an important voice for the constituency.

Umeh cited her constituency projects, scholarship programmes, infrastructure initiatives and empowerment schemes as evidence of her efforts to support residents.

He also commended her participation in legislative proceedings and her contribution to discussions on issues affecting the constituency.

The senator called on constituents to support Orogbu’s bid for another term in the House of Representatives, saying her return could give her the opportunity to become a ranking member and strengthen her ability to attract further development projects.
