Osun Commissioner Arrested Over Gunshots At APC Rally

The Osun State Commissioner for Environment, Mayowa Asejoorin, has been arrested by the police following a shooting incident at an All Progressives Congress rally in Ilesa on Saturday.

Four people were reportedly injured when gunshots were fired during the political gathering in the Ilesa metropolis. No death had been reported as of the time of filing the report.

The incident occurred after APC supporters were allegedly attacked by some chieftains of the Accord Party during the rally. The confrontation reportedly led to sporadic gunfire, leaving several people with varying degrees of injuries.

One of the victims was identified as 14-year-old Ilesanmi, who was reportedly hit by a stray bullet while he was at his mother’s shop.

An eyewitness, Kola Adeoti, said the teenager sustained a gunshot injury to his thigh during the incident.

Adeoti also alleged that security personnel attached to the Accord chieftains opened fire directly at APC supporters, triggering protests within Ilesa.

The police confirmed that an investigation had commenced following the incident.

The spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said officers were immediately deployed to the area after receiving the report. The scene was cordoned off and some items were recovered.

According to him, the recovered exhibits included spent cartridges and caps belonging to personnel of the Amotekun security outfit.

Ojelabi confirmed that Asejoorin was arrested at the scene and taken to the police command for questioning as part of the investigation.

The injured victims were taken to hospital for medical treatment, while security operatives continued efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify those responsible.
