The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has frozen a bank account belonging to the Osun State Government just 10 days before the state’s governorship election.

Documents obtained showed that the affected account, which is domiciled with First Bank and reportedly used for the payment of workers’ salaries, has been placed on a “Post No Debit” restriction by the anti-graft agency.

The action came only hours after Governor Ademola Adeleke alleged that the EFCC was planning to freeze the accounts of the state government and some top officials.

In a statement issued on Wednesday through the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the governor described the reported move as an attempt to disrupt government activities ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

Adeleke argued that there was no legal justification for freezing the state’s accounts, maintaining that the EFCC does not have the legal authority to take such action against the state government.
A source close to the governor, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to comment publicly, confirmed that the account had already been frozen.
The source said the development had gone beyond speculation, adding that Governor Adeleke would address journalists to brief the public on the situation.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not released an official statement regarding the action. The commission also did not disclose the reason for restricting the account.
The development comes as political activities intensify ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.
