Nigerian Senator Dumps NDC, Defects to APC

Senator Rufai Hanga, who represents Kano Central Senatorial District and serves as the Senate Deputy Minority Whip, has resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Hanga announced his decision in a resignation letter dated August 3, 2026, addressed to the NDC Ward Chairman in Dakata Ward, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

The senator stated that his resignation took immediate effect.

In the letter, Hanga said he decided to leave the NDC after careful consideration. He explained that the move was influenced by his desire to pursue other personal commitments and career plans.

He expressed appreciation to the leaders and members of the party in Dakata Ward for the support and cooperation they gave him during his time as a member.

The lawmaker also thanked party members for the relationships he built and the experiences he gained while participating in the party’s activities.

As part of the resignation process, Hanga requested that his name be removed from the NDC membership register. He also returned his party membership card along with the resignation letter.

Following his departure from the opposition party, the Kano Central senator formally joined the All Progressives Congress, bringing his membership of the NDC to an end.

Hanga concluded his letter by wishing the Nigeria Democratic Congress and its members success in their future political activities.
