Ex-Councillor Shot Dead in Plateau Attack

Gunmen have killed a former councillor representing Rim Ward in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, Hon. Daniel Danjuma Chong, popularly known as “Hon. Star,” during an attack on Torok village in Rim Community.

The attack reportedly occurred at about 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, sending residents into panic as gunshots echoed across the community.

A resident, Mrs. Cynitha Dung, said many people fled their homes after hearing continuous gunfire. She explained that when the shooting stopped, residents discovered that the former councillor had been fatally shot.

Another resident, Mr. David Dachollom Danjuma, was also injured during the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) condemned the killing, describing it as another violent attack on residents of Riyom Local Government Area.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, the association said the attackers invaded the community under the cover of darkness, opened fire on residents and killed the former councillor before escaping.

The group expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased and the people of Torok community, while wishing the injured victim a quick recovery.

The association called on security agencies and the Plateau State Government to identify those behind the attack and ensure they are arrested and prosecuted.

It also urged authorities to strengthen security in vulnerable communities across the state to prevent further attacks.

The group renewed its call for the dismantling of criminal hideouts allegedly operating within the area and again advocated a ban on open grazing, arguing that criminal groups have continued to exploit the practice.

As of the time of filing this report, the spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, had not issued an official statement on the incident.
