Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has directed the immediate demolition of an illegal settlement near Karmajiji in the Kukwaba District of Abuja, following reports linking the area to criminal activities.

The directive was issued on Friday after Wike, accompanied by security operatives, visited the settlement shortly after a meeting of the FCT Security Committee.

The minister said the action forms part of the FCT Administration’s ongoing efforts to improve security across the nation’s capital and eliminate locations believed to be used by criminal elements.

According to him, intelligence reports indicated that suspected criminals often returned to the settlement after carrying out attacks in different parts of the Federal Capital Territory.

Wike said the illegal community posed a serious security risk because authorities could not easily identify those living there or trace individuals operating from the area. He maintained that allowing such settlements to remain within the city would create opportunities for criminals to continue their activities.
He directed the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, to work closely with the Director of the Department of Development Control to ensure the immediate demolition of the settlement.
The minister also warned that anyone found using illegal settlements to support or conceal criminal activities would face legal action.
He explained that the demolition exercise is part of wider measures by the FCT Administration to dismantle criminal hideouts, improve public safety and safeguard residents across Abuja.
Wike restated the administration’s commitment to strengthening security operations throughout the territory, adding that protecting lives and property remains one of its major responsibilities.
