Nigerians Demand Justice After Killing of Citizen by S’African Police

Anger has spread among Nigerians following the alleged killing of a Nigerian citizen, Chika Ibe, during a police operation in South Africa, with many calling on the Federal Government to take stronger diplomatic action over the incident.

Mr Ibe, who was from Lokpaukwu in Abia State, reportedly died during an operation carried out by officers of the South African Police Service (SAPS) at the Parksig Villas Complex in Bellville, Cape Town, on Thursday.

Videos circulating online from the scene also showed another Nigerian national with serious injuries to the mouth, allegedly sustained during the same operation.

According to reports, Mr Ibe allegedly died after suffering severe assault, torture, inhuman treatment and suspected suffocation while in the custody of the officers involved.

Footage shared on social media showed his body being placed in a body bag before being taken away in a police vehicle. Other videos showed members of the Nigerian community gathering to condemn the incident and mourn his death.

The development has sparked widespread reactions across social media, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over repeated reports of attacks and deaths involving Nigerian nationals in South Africa.

Several social media users criticised the Federal Government, accusing it of failing to respond firmly to incidents involving Nigerians living in the country. Some called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to adopt stronger diplomatic measures to protect citizens abroad.

Others urged the government to review its relationship with South Africa, including considering diplomatic steps they believe would compel South African authorities to address the repeated complaints involving Nigerians.

Some commentators also questioned why South African businesses continue to operate freely in Nigeria despite recurring reports of attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa.

Many Nigerians argued that citizens who are legally resident in South Africa deserve protection under the country’s laws, just as South Africans living and doing business in Nigeria enjoy security and freedom.

Others said repeated promises of investigations into similar incidents have rarely resulted in justice, insisting that those responsible should be identified and prosecuted to prevent future occurrences.

The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) also condemned the alleged killing and called for an independent investigation into the incident.

The association described the allegations surrounding Mr Ibe’s death as deeply disturbing and said any officer found responsible should face prosecution if investigations confirm wrongdoing.

NICASA urged the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and the leadership of the South African Police Service to carry out a transparent and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The association maintained that allegations involving torture, excessive force and the unlawful loss of life must be treated seriously and handled in accordance with the law as efforts continue to establish the full facts surrounding Mr Ibe’s death.
