Police Investigate Physiotherapist’s Death at Umahi’s Residence

The Ebonyi State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the death of Miss Mary Habila, a physiotherapist attached to the medical team of the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, who died at the minister’s residence in Uburu on June 27, 2026.

According to the police, Habila was brought dead to the David Umahi Federal Teaching Hospital in Uburu after officers at the Ohaozara Divisional Police Headquarters received a distress call.

In a statement issued in Abakaliki, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, said the Divisional Police Officer immediately informed the Commissioner of Police about the incident, after which the matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a detailed investigation.

The police disclosed that preliminary findings showed that the deceased and another medical worker were members of the medical team assigned to the Minister of Works and had accompanied him to his hometown in Uburu.

According to the Command, Habila died in a room located within the compound of the minister’s residence.

Police detectives have since visited the scene of the incident and obtained statements from persons considered relevant to the investigation.

The Command also disclosed that arrangements are being made for a pathologist to carry out a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of Habila’s death.
