Presidency Breaks Silence on Peter Obi’s Death Threat Claim

The Presidency has rejected claims by the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, that the Federal Government is targeting him and deliberately frustrating his activities.

The reaction followed comments made by Obi during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo on the programme With Chude, where he spoke about his concerns over his safety and political future.

A video clip from the interview was shared on Jideonwo’s X account on Wednesday.

During the interview, Obi said he was uncertain whether he would still be alive to contest the 2027 presidential election. He claimed the challenges surrounding him had become overwhelming and alleged that the government was making deliberate efforts to frustrate everything he was involved in.

Responding to the claims, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, dismissed Obi’s remarks, saying there was no truth to his allegations.

Onanuga also rejected Obi’s claim relating to an incident involving his vehicle at an airport and his fears about his safety ahead of the next general election.

He accused the former Anambra State governor of repeatedly making allegations without evidence and attempting to link the Federal Government to personal issues.

According to the presidential spokesman, Obi has a history of making unfounded claims and exaggerating situations in a way that portrays the government negatively.

He also argued that Obi’s statement about not being alive for the 2027 election and his claim that people were being discouraged from inviting him to public events were fabricated stories aimed at attracting public sympathy.

Onanuga further said the allegations were intended to divert attention from questions surrounding Obi’s credibility, his Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), and his adopted political platform, the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

The Presidency also dismissed reports suggesting that the Federal Government was targeting Fidelity Bank, where Obi is believed to have substantial business interests.

Onanuga maintained that the bank remains stable and continues to perform under the current administration’s economic reforms.

He added that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains focused on implementing policies aimed at strengthening the economy and improving the welfare of Nigerians rather than engaging in political disputes.

The presidential aide insisted that the government has no interest in persecuting Obi or interfering with any financial institution linked to him.

He concluded that the administration would continue concentrating on its reform agenda and would not be distracted by what it described as Obi’s repeated claims and political narratives.
