US Speaks On Nigeria’s 2027 Elections

A member of the United States House of Representatives, Riley Moore, has said the administration of President Donald Trump will closely monitor the conduct of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Moore, a Republican representing West Virginia, made the remarks during an interview with NoireTV, which was published on the platform’s social media pages on Sunday. He spoke while responding to questions about Nigeria’s next general election and the role the United States could play in supporting credible elections.

The lawmaker said the US government would carefully observe how the elections are conducted and the manner in which the entire process unfolds. He added that both he and the Trump administration would pay close attention to developments surrounding the polls.

Moore also revealed that the US House of Representatives is considering an appropriations bill containing provisions that relate to Nigeria, particularly on religious freedom and future American security assistance to the country.

He explained that he is working alongside Congressman Chris Smith on proposed legislation affecting Nigeria and noted that the appropriations bill before the House contains additional provisions he personally introduced.

According to him, the proposed bill includes measures linked to the persecution of Christians in Nigeria, restrictions on US security assistance and conditions the Nigerian government would need to meet. He said the legislation is expected to shape future relations between both countries if it becomes law.

Moore expressed confidence that the bill would receive approval, adding that its provisions would become binding and influence future engagements between the United States and Nigeria.

The congressman also disclosed that he would continue discussing developments concerning Nigeria with the Trump administration. He revealed that he was scheduled to have dinner with President Trump and other lawmakers, where such issues would remain part of ongoing conversations.

Moore is a co-sponsor of the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, introduced in February alongside Congressman Chris Smith.

If enacted, the proposed law would require the US Secretary of State to submit regular reports to Congress on efforts to address religious persecution and mass atrocities in Nigeria.

The bill also seeks periodic assessments of Nigeria’s compliance with international religious freedom obligations, reviews of US security assistance and sanctions, evaluations of humanitarian support, and updates on actions taken by Nigerian authorities to protect vulnerable communities and prosecute those responsible for attacks.
