Oyo Schools To Remain Shut Over Insecurity – NUT

Public schools in Oyo State will remain closed until the government puts stronger security measures in place, according to the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Oyo State Wing.

The union linked the decision to rising insecurity and recent attacks on schools and staff.

The strike followed the abduction of more than 40 students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15.

The union said the situation created fear among teachers, parents and pupils, making learning environments unsafe across the state.

The NUT explained that the shutdown became necessary after two teachers were killed and several victims remained in captivity.

It added that parents have also begun withdrawing their children from schools due to safety concerns.

The union said schools would only reopen when concrete security actions are taken, including the rescue of abducted victims and improved protection for learning centres.

It called for stronger patrols and joint security operations to restore confidence and allow teaching to resume.
