Why Fubara Withdrew From 2027 Governorship Race – Wike

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has linked Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s withdrawal from the 2027 governorship race to a political peace deal aimed at calming tensions in Rivers State.

He spoke to journalists in Abuja after inspecting ongoing infrastructure projects across the capital.

According to him, the move aligns with earlier understandings reached during reconciliation talks. He added that the process was part of wider efforts to restore stability in the state.

Wike explained that the arrangement followed discussions among key stakeholders in Rivers politics. He said the deal included commitments meant to reduce political conflict and maintain order.

The minister also recalled that the governor had earlier stepped down from the APC governorship primary after consultations. Fubara had said his decision was taken in the interest of peace and unity.

He maintained that the withdrawal did not come as a surprise, pointing to the terms of the earlier understanding. Wike said part of the agreement involved dropping impeachment moves and avoiding a second term ambition.

He also criticised the governor’s earlier decision to enter the race despite the arrangement. According to him, that move went against the spirit of the peace process.

The FCT minister also expressed support for Kingsley Chinda’s political profile, describing him as well suited for leadership. He said the lawmaker has experience in both legislative and executive matters.

Wike further noted that recent developments show progress in the political situation in Rivers State. He added that with Fubara’s withdrawal, a new direction has emerged in the state’s political landscape.
