Southern Leaders Reject Power Shift

Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum has declared that Nigeria’s presidency should remain in the South after the 2027 elections, warning that any move to shift power back to the North could create political tension and threaten national stability.

The group made its position known after an emergency meeting in Kaduna attended by leaders from Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Middle Belt Forum and Pan Niger Delta Forum.

The leaders said power rotation between North and South must continue in the interest of fairness and unity.

The forum also called on political parties to zone their presidential tickets to Southern Nigeria ahead of the next election.
It further demanded reforms to the Electoral Act, stronger independence for Independent National Electoral Commission and urgent action on worsening insecurity across the country.
The group backed the creation of state police and criticised the treatment allegedly given to repentant terrorists while many victims remain displaced.
It also urged the Federal Government to support local refineries, tackle economic hardship and protect Nigerians facing xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
