Wike Steps In To End FCT Teachers’ Strike

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has intervened in the ongoing teachers’ strike in Abuja by directing direct payment of outstanding allowances.

Wike met with leaders of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) FCT chapter, expressing concern that the strike was disrupting schooling for public school pupils.

To address the crisis, Wike announced that a committee had been formed to tackle teachers’ welfare, including unpaid entitlements.

He ordered that Internally Generated Revenue from the area councils be used to pay the outstanding amounts, aiming to avoid further disruption in education.

The minister stressed that children’s education must be protected above all.

Wike acknowledged that while the payment of teachers’ salaries is the responsibility of area councils, the FCT Administration stepped in to prevent a prolonged shutdown.

The union is still reviewing whether to suspend the indefinite strike declared last week.

Teachers’ demands, including salary adjustments and owed allowances, triggered the strike last week.

Until further decisions are made by the union, schools in the FCT remain affected.

Wike’s intervention aims to break the deadlock, but a final resolution will depend on addressing all outstanding concerns.
