Police Stops Abuja Football Protest

On Wednesday in Abuja, the Nigeria Police Force blocked a planned protest by the Reform Our Football group at the MKO Abiola National Stadium Velodrome.

The group had earlier informed the FCT police leadership about the planned action.

The protest was meant to push for changes in football administration. Organisers said the event was peaceful in nature.
The group, led by Leo Olagbaye, said it had properly notified the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, before the scheduled date.

Despite this, officers stopped the gathering before it could begin.
The planned march was expected to move from the stadium to the Nigeria Football Federation headquarters. The group said the action disrupted a lawful assembly.
The protesters are calling for reforms in the Nigeria Football Federation and also raised concerns about the role of the National Sports Commission.
They accused both bodies of poor coordination and weak leadership in football development. They also questioned past assurances about World Cup qualification. The group said repeated promises had not been fulfilled.
Following the police action, the group said it would escalate the matter to the Presidency. It insists that football governance in the country needs stronger accountability and structure.
The protest had been scheduled for Thursday morning but did not hold. Authorities have not issued a detailed public response to the stoppage.
