Opposition Earned At Polls Not Coalitions – Wike

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a key figure in the Peoples Democratic Party, said on Friday that opposition status in Nigeria must be earned through electoral victories and not through emergency coalitions.

He spoke during a visit to the PDP national headquarters in Abuja. Wike also restated his support for the party’s new National Working Committee.

He said political relevance should be proven at the ballot box, not through claims.

Wike stated that opposition claims without electoral success carry no weight in Nigeria’s political space. He said You cannot become an opposition party without winning an election.

Those who say they are leading the opposition have not contested any election successfully.

He added that many groups claiming opposition leadership lack real electoral strength. According to him, only performance at elections defines true political standing.

During the visit, Wike reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP leadership and said his presence was to show unity as the party works to rebuild after internal issues.

Wike noted that unresolved disputes and legal battles should not distract the party from its goals.

PDP national leadership welcomed the visit and expressed confidence in rebuilding the party ahead of future elections.

Party officials said they remain focused on restoring public trust and improving electoral performance in 2027.

Wike also expressed confidence that ongoing legal challenges involving the party would not succeed, saying the party would overcome its opponents through unity and focus.
