Supreme Court Set For ADC, PDP Showdown

The Supreme Court of Nigeria is scheduled to hear separate appeals on Tuesday arising from leadership crises within the African Democratic Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party.

The cases stem from disputes over party leadership and earlier rulings by the Court of Appeal of Nigeria. Both matters are expected to shape the future of the opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.

Former Senate President David Mark is challenging a judgment affecting ADC leadership, seeking to halt its enforcement pending final decision.

At the same time, a faction of the PDP led by Tanimu Turaki is contesting an appellate ruling that nullified its convention and leadership structure.

The faction warned that allowing the ruling to stand could destabilise the party.

Mark’s legal team is asking the court to stop the execution of the earlier judgment and restrain Independent National Electoral Commission from recognising any other leadership.

He also wants ongoing proceedings at the Federal High Court paused until the appeal is decided. His lawyers argue that failure to grant the request could render the appeal useless.

The cases follow ongoing tensions within both parties, including disputes over leadership legitimacy and INEC’s role.

Multiple factions have emerged, each claiming authority, while legal battles continue across different courts. Attention now shifts to the apex court, whose decision could determine the direction of both parties.
