Lagos Starts Sueing Tax Defaulters

The government of Lagos State has taken 45 companies and individuals to court over unpaid taxes running into billions of naira.

The cases were filed at the state Revenue Court as part of efforts to recover outstanding funds. Authorities said the move followed repeated warnings that were ignored.

Among those listed is Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited, operators of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two, with an alleged debt of over ₦38.7 million.

Other firms named include GMT Energy Resources Limited, Sheriff Deputies Limited, and several companies across sectors. Officials said most of the debt comes from corporate organisations.

The Attorney-General, Lawal Pedro, explained that the government turned to legal action after defaulters failed to respond or settle their obligations.

He said the exercise is aimed at enforcing tax laws and boosting revenue needed for infrastructure and public services across the state.

He added that those who clear their debts after receiving notices will not face prosecution.

Residents and business owners were advised to file returns on time and pay taxes promptly, as continued default may lead to penalties and further legal action.
