A diaspora group, the Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria, has written to Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Prime Minister of Qatar, asking his government to reject the proposed appointment of Mahmood Yakubu as Nigeria’s ambassador.

In a letter dated March 17 and signed by its coordinator Frederick Odorige, the group described the former Independent National Electoral Commission chairman as unfit for the role, alleging that his nomination was driven by hidden interests.

The coalition accused Yakubu, who led INEC from 2015 to 2025, of overseeing irregularities during the 2023 presidential election.

It also claimed he was not properly screened by Nigeria’s National Assembly and alleged that his diplomatic posting could be an attempt to shield him from accountability.

The group further cited concerns about electoral credibility, court-related issues, and international observations on the election, urging Qatari authorities to conduct independent checks before accepting the nomination.

It warned that accepting the appointment could have diplomatic and reputational implications, while insisting that other qualified Nigerians could better represent the country abroad.
