Court Stops Ondo ex-SDP Candidate Burial

A Lagos State High Court sitting at Osborne has adjourned hearing in a suit over the burial of former Ondo State SDP governorship candidate, Chief Bamidele Akingboye, to March 2, 2026.

The court had earlier restrained the Medical Director of Lagos Island General Hospital, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, the Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, and Samuel Akingboye from burying, moving or tampering with the body pending the determination of a substantive motion.

The suit was filed by Mrs Christiana Akingboye and six of her children, who asked the court to stop any burial arrangements without their involvement.

They also urged the court to maintain the status quo until the matter is fully heard.

The court further ordered that no steps should be taken regarding the movement, release or handling of the body until the case is decided.

It also barred the deceased’s first son, Samuel Akingboye, or anyone acting on his behalf, from arranging a burial within or outside Lagos State for now.

Chief Akingboye died on September 3, 2025, in Lagos. His death initially led to public controversy and a police investigation. Allegations of foul play were raised, particularly against his wife and children.

However, the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions later issued legal advice stating that there was no case against the widow, her children or any member of the household.

The review found no evidence of harm, and the post-mortem report said the death was consistent with suicide.

The case will continue on March 2 as the family dispute over burial arrangements remains unresolved.
