New Tension Builds At PDP Secretariat

A fresh confrontation looms at the Peoples Democratic Party national secretariat in Abuja as rival camps loyal to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike prepare to assert control.

The standoff centres on plans by a Wike-backed caretaker committee to reopen the Wadata Plaza office today with police support, a move that has raised fears of clashes.

The caretaker faction says it is acting on a Federal High Court ruling from Ibadan, which it claims affirms its authority.

Its national secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, had earlier announced that the group would take over the secretariat, insisting the judgment remains valid despite an appeal.

According to the committee, fumigation and clean-up will begin immediately, followed by preparations for party activities, including the sale of nomination forms for the upcoming convention.

Committee spokesperson Jogudo Mohammed warned that any attempt to disrupt activities would have consequences.

“Any individual previously restrained from parading himself as a national officer of the party who attempts to obstruct lawful activities at the secretariat may be held in contempt of court,” he said, adding that law enforcement agencies were expected to act in line with the court order.

The opposing faction, led by Tanimu Turaki and backed by several governors, has urged restraint, stressing that the matter is still before the courts.

Its leaders warned against self-help and said responsibility for any breakdown of order would rest with the police.

Despite the tension, party elders expressed confidence that the Court of Appeal would eventually resolve the dispute and steady the party ahead of future contests.
