Wike Pushes Back On Judiciary Claims

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has rejected claims that new judicial projects in Abuja could weaken the independence of the judiciary.

He spoke after inspecting ongoing court-related projects in the capital, saying the concerns were misplaced.

The projects include the Court of Appeal complex, judges’ quarters and official residences for heads of courts.

Wike explained that the developments are presidential interventions carried out through the FCT Administration and supervised by the Federal Capital Development Authority to improve welfare, security and efficiency within the judiciary.
Responding to criticism, he said, “There is nothing you would do that critics will not criticise. Before now, people complained that judges had nowhere to stay to do their work effectively.
He disclosed that a new Court of Appeal division with a separate administrative headquarters is nearly completed, while 40 housing units are being built for judges across different courts, with similar plans for the National Industrial Court.
He added that official residences for heads of courts are also underway and should be ready by mid-year, describing the effort as unprecedented despite earlier delays caused by heavy rainfall.
