INEC Fixes Date For FCT Council Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission has confirmed that elections into the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory will take place on Saturday, February 21, 2026.

INEC said the exercise will cover chairmanship and councillorship positions across Abuja’s Area Councils. The commission assured residents that preparations are ongoing to ensure a smooth and credible election.

According to INEC, the polls will allow registered voters in the FCT to elect their local government representatives in line with the electoral timetable already released.

The commission urged political parties, candidates and voters to comply with electoral guidelines and maintain peace before, during and after the election.

INEC also called on security agencies, civil society groups and other stakeholders to support the process to guarantee free and fair elections across the territory.
