The Federal Government and Ogun State have completed the transfer of Tai Solarin University of Education to federal ownership, sealing the move with a Memorandum of Understanding during the institution’s 17th convocation ceremony in Ijagun.

The agreement marks a new phase for the university, now renamed Tai Solarin Federal University of Education.

The MoU was signed at the university campus by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and the Minister of State for Education, Dr Suwaiba Sa’idu Ahmad, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The event also featured the award of honorary degrees and the graduation of thousands of students, formally closing the chapter of state ownership.

The Federal Government said the takeover, approved in March 2025, was a planned decision driven by national interest.
Dr Ahmad explained that the move reflects the belief that strong education systems depend on well-trained teachers and steady investment in learning.
He said the transition also honours the legacies of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Bisi Onabanjo, and the Awujale of Ijebuland for their roles in education and regional progress.
He confirmed that Ogun State had formally handed over the institution and disclosed that ₦275.4 billion was set aside for education in the state’s 2026 budget to widen access and reduce inequality.
University officials praised both governments for a smooth transition, noting that all academic programmes retain full accreditation.
