APC Gains Big Political Names In Kano

The political landscape in Kano State shifted on Saturday as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and a large bloc of elected officials prepared to formally join the All Progressives Congress, days after quitting the New Nigeria Peoples Party.

The move follows Yusuf’s resignation from the NNPP on Friday alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and 44 local government chairmen.

APC officials confirmed that arrangements were completed for the governor and his supporters to be received into the ruling party, acting on the directive of the APC national leadership.

Yusuf’s decision was officially communicated in a letter submitted to his former ward leadership, where he pointed to unresolved leadership crises and prolonged court cases within the NNPP as reasons for leaving.

His defection came shortly after a private meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja, fuelling speculation about a major realignment in the state.

He urged party members across Kano to remain loyal to the movement, insisting that political strength lies with the people rather than elected office holders.

The NNPP also dismissed fears that Yusuf’s exit would weaken its grip on Kano politics, arguing that the party and the Kwankwasiyya movement still enjoy wide grassroots support.

Party officials accused the governor of abandoning the mandate freely given to him by voters, while maintaining confidence that the NNPP would remain competitive in the state ahead of 2027.
