Makinde Addresses PDP Exit Rumours

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Thursday said he has no plans to leave the Peoples Democratic Party, putting an end to growing speculation about a possible defection following his visit to the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Makinde spoke to journalists at the State House shortly after meeting President Bola Tinubu. Responding to questions about his political future, he said, “No, no, no. I’m comfortable in the PDP.”

He added that his presence at the Villa should not be read as a signal of a party switch.
The governor explained that national issues sometimes require cooperation across party lines, noting that progress cannot always come from one political side acting alone.

According to him, moments arise when leaders must work together to decide “what is the best foot forward, in the interest of our nation.”

Earlier in the day, President Tinubu held separate meetings with Makinde and Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang at the Presidential Villa.

The governors arrived at different times, with Mutfwang meeting the president first, followed by Makinde about thirty minutes later.

The meetings come amid intense political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections. Makinde remains one of the few governors still in the PDP after several defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

He is also widely seen as a potential contender for his party’s presidential ticket, while Mutfwang recently left the PDP for the APC and was meeting Tinubu for the first time since his move.
