Fresh concerns about the credibility of the 2027 general elections are pushing many politicians to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress, according to former PDP National Legal Adviser Jacob Mark.

He says the movement is driven more by fear than by faith in governance.
Mark spoke amid internal efforts by the Peoples Democratic Party to steady itself ahead of the next election cycle, including consultations with former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He said Jonathan’s reassurance has boosted morale within the party and reminded members of its long role in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
He explained that many politicians believe election outcomes may be decided in advance, making them feel unsafe staying in opposition parties. This fear, he argued, has led lawmakers, governors, and party leaders to seek shelter in the APC, even as public hardship deepens across the country.

According to him, the defections are not based on public support, noting that many communities are angry and frustrated with rising living costs, insecurity, and weak governance. He warned that concentrating power in one party threatens democratic balance and risks shutting out voters’ voices.
Looking toward 2027, Mark said opposition parties can still compete if they resolve disputes politically and present credible candidates. He added that the real test lies with Nigerians, who must insist on free elections and resist any attempt to weaken democracy.
