Tension is rising in Rivers State as the Ijaw Youth Council has stepped into the growing political battle ahead of the 2027 election by openly backing Governor Siminalayi Fubara for a second term.

The move deepens the rift linked to the power struggle between Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The endorsement was announced by the Ijaw Youth Council leadership through its president, Theophilus Alaye, after consultations across Ijaw communities nationwide. The group said its decision reflects the shared view of Ijaw youths on the future direction of Rivers politics.

The council said it took the step now because of what it described as rising interference in the affairs of the state. It argued that Rivers needs calm leadership at a sensitive time and warned that pressure on the governor could threaten stability.
According to the group, Fubara has remained focused on governance despite political distractions. It pointed to ongoing efforts in road projects, urban renewal, youth jobs, education, healthcare delivery, peacebuilding, and public accountability as reasons for its support.

The Ijaw Youth Council also rejected any political plans linked to Wike or his allies that seek to weaken the governor’s authority. It stressed that former leaders in other states have allowed successors to lead freely and said Rivers should not be different.
The council said continued respect for the will of Rivers people will shape Ijaw support in 2027. It added that backing Fubara’s second term is about protecting peace, unity, and steady development across the state.
