Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has warned that Nigeria’s rising youth unemployment shows deep cracks in the country’s leadership and economic direction.

He reacted to a report by ActionAid and Plan International which puts youth unemployment at about 80 per cent, a figure he said translates to more than 80 million young Nigerians without jobs.

The comment came as concerns grow over the future of young people in a country where the majority of the population is under 35 and struggling to find stable work.

Obi said the crisis is not caused by young people themselves but by poor decisions made by those in power, who have failed to place youth development and job creation at the centre of governance.
He blamed years of waste, corruption and heavy borrowing, saying these choices have weakened small businesses, reduced production and widened poverty across the country.
Obi called on Nigerian youths to take charge of their future by staying engaged and pushing for leaders who will build an economy that creates jobs and gives young people a real chance to succeed.
