NLC Calls Nationwide Protest Over Rising Insecurity

The Nigeria Labour Congress has fixed December 17 for a nationwide protest as workers move to challenge the growing wave of insecurity across the country.

The decision followed a national executive meeting held earlier this month, where members raised concern about constant attacks by bandits and kidnappers.

The labour body pointed to the November 17 abduction of female students from a boarding school in Kebbi as a fresh reminder of how unsafe many learning centres have become. The group said security personnel were withdrawn from the school shortly before the incident, a move it described as a major failure that must be investigated.

The NLC accused the federal government of not doing enough to protect schools, especially those in remote and exposed communities. It said the rising cases of school kidnappings have left parents and teachers living in fear, urging authorities to act quickly to prevent further attacks.

The organisation directed its affiliates and state councils to begin full mobilisation for the December protest. It said workers and civil society groups across the country are expected to take part in the demonstration to demand better safety measures.

The congress also insisted that those responsible for the withdrawal of security personnel in Kebbi must face the law. It said only a thorough investigation and prosecution can restore public confidence and discourage future lapses.

With the date approaching, the NLC is pushing for stronger protection for pupils, teachers, and communities as insecurity continues to disrupt daily life nationwide.
