PDP Mocks Fubara Over APC Move

The Peoples Democratic Party has reacted to Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s move to the All Progressives Congress, describing his action as a self-inflicted political setback.

The party spoke shortly after the governor confirmed his defection in Port Harcourt following a visit to President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.

The issue began when Fubara announced that he and some of his appointees were leaving the PDP to align with the APC. He said the choice was based on loyalty to the president and a belief that the PDP failed to offer the support he expected during the prolonged crisis in Rivers State.

The PDP explained that Fubara’s journey to this point was a result of decisions he made on his own. Party officials said he chose the path that eventually led him into the current political storm and cannot blame others for what followed. They argued that he received support from many groups during the conflict and warned that he should avoid falling into a pattern where loyalty shifts toward those he once viewed as opponents.

The party also raised wider concerns about the growing tension in Rivers politics. PDP leaders said the crisis reflects a system where powerful individuals outweigh institutions, allowing federal influence to shape outcomes and weaken rivals. They warned that this kind of pressure endangers fair political competition.

Beyond the immediate drama surrounding Fubara, the PDP warned that Nigeria’s democracy faces fresh threats. They accused the ruling party of trying to shrink the political space and push the country toward a one-party structure, which they said risks turning elections into empty rituals.

The party called on Nigerians and the international community to pay attention to these developments. They urged citizens to defend democratic values and remain alert to actions that weaken political freedom or limit open competition.
