Senate Summons Education Minister And WAEC Over New SSCE Rules

The Senate has summoned Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa and WAEC Head of National Office Dr. Amos Dangut over sudden changes to the 2025/2026 SSCE guidelines.

Lawmakers say the revised rules alter subject requirements for current SS3 students who are already preparing for their May/June exams.

Senator Sunday Karimi warned that removing subjects like Computer Studies, Civic Education, and Trade subjects could lead to widespread failure, as students would now be forced to sit for unfamiliar subjects without prior teaching. Senators argued that while the newly introduced trade subjects are commendable, forcing them on students at short notice is unfair and unrealistic.

Several lawmakers, including Adams Oshiomhole and Idiat Adebule, criticised the timing, questioning whether schools have teachers, labs, or resources to support the new curriculum. Senate President Godswill Akpabio also questioned why essential subjects such as Computer Studies and Civic Education were removed.

The Senate has referred the matter to the Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, which is expected to report back within two weeks.
