Pro-Biafra Groups Vow To Push Harder After Kanu Sentence

A coalition of pro-Biafra organisations has rejected the life sentence handed to Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, saying the ruling will only fuel stronger agitation across the region.

The groups made their position known during a press briefing in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

Led by Uchenna Madu of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, the coalition said the judgment delivered in Sokoto was unlawful and would not weaken their demand for self-determination. Madu said the imprisonment of Kanu had instead reinforced their resolve to continue their push for an independent Biafra.

The coalition described itself as a non-violent network of groups pursuing self-rule through legal, political and diplomatic channels. Members said they stand united in rejecting the ruling and accused the Nigerian state of violating international agreements on human rights and the rights of indigenous peoples.

They insisted that the sentence would not derail the agitation but would inspire renewed energy among supporters across the South-East. The groups urged all pro-Biafra activists to close ranks and remain focused as the wider struggle for political freedom continues.

The coalition also raised concerns about insecurity, alleging an influx of armed groups into parts of the country. They said such movements would be resisted within what they described as Biafran territory.

Organisations in the coalition include the Eastern Peoples’ Congress, Billie Human Rights Initiative, Biafra Liberation Council, Biafra Revolutionary Force, Biafra Revolutionary Organization, Biafra Reconciliation, and the Union of Biafra Scientists and Engineers.
