Mohammed Badaru has stepped down from his role as Nigeria’s minister of defence, ending his tenure with immediate effect.

His resignation was conveyed in a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, where he cited health concerns as the reason for leaving office.

The decision was confirmed in a statement issued by the president’s media team, which noted that Tinubu has accepted Badaru’s exit and expressed appreciation for his service. The president is expected to forward the name of a new minister to the senate later in the week.

Badaru, aged 63, previously served two terms as governor of Jigawa State before joining the federal cabinet in August 2023. His departure comes at a time when the president has declared a national security emergency and is preparing to unveil plans for addressing rising threats across the country.
