Resident doctors at the University College Hospital in Ibadan are back at work after a nationwide strike that lasted one month.

The action, which started on November 1, followed a directive from the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors after the government failed to meet key welfare and staffing demands.

The doctors had pushed for a major increase in the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, payment of long-pending allowances, fresh recruitment of clinical staff, and the removal of delays affecting the replacement of outgoing doctors.

UCH NARD President, Dr Gboyega Ajibola, said the union’s National Executive Council met on November 29 to review the situation and noted that the government had addressed most immediate and short-term concerns. He confirmed that both sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding outlining the demands and the timelines for delivering on them.
According to him, the NEC agreed to suspend the strike and give the government four weeks to act on the commitments. Congress meetings were then held across centres on December 1 to update members on the agreement.
Ajibola said all resident doctors at UCH returned to their duty posts on Monday after receiving instructions from their centre leadership.
